“Surprisingly good”

Dominik K.
7/10/23

Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.

Top Critical Review

“Not even worthy of one star!”

J. R.
3/18/24

Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.

I hate it because of it's constant bull$#*! about subscribing. I don't want to subscribe to read a $#*!ing document that isn't even yours. Scribd is full of $#*!ty documents which in order to read them, you need to pay 9 dollars a month. Every time I come to this site not for it's stupid bestselling books that no one needs or reads, but for these documents which were illegally uploaded without theirs author's consent.

Hi Euthanasius - I'm sorry to hear about your frustration with our service - it is not a free service that we offer, but a recurring monthly subscription for all content on our site. All documents are uploaded by individual users - if you believe something has been uploaded without the author's permission, please feel free to email us at help@scribd.com. Thank you!

This company is a fraud. Do not fall to the free subscription trap.
They kept charging on my card even after the end of subscription.
There is no way you contact them, their only support contact does not respond.
They do not have any customer care.
Money eaters they are.

Tip for consumers:
Do not visit this website and not at all recommended

This company is a total scam. I never signed up to this business, never purchased anything from them and never had an account with them. They started taking £9.99 a month from my account in Aug 2021 (increasing to £10.99 a month in April 2022). I had no way of cancelling these payments as I did not have an account with them and therefore could not log in to their website. The only interaction I have ever had with this company is in April 2012 when I read something using Scribd on Facebook and they emailed me. This was over nine years before they then started taking money from me. TOTAL scam.

Verified purchase

I had inadvertently signed up for two separate Scribd accounts, and so paid for two subscriptions for about 8 months before realising I had signed up twice. Now why did I not realise that I had two accounts? Because although Scribd charged me twice every month, I was only able to access Scribd through ONE of my email addresses, leading me to think I had only one account.

When I raised this with Scribd, they refunded me only the latest charge, when this had gone on for 9 months. They then point to their Refund Policy, which requires that you challenge any charge within 30 days. Needless to say if I have only one account that is usable, I don't think Scribd is charging me for two.

Utterly dishonest company. Stay well away from them.

Thank you for informing us, Leonard. Per our refund policy, we are typically only able to refund charges that are less than 30 days old. However, we can take a look at your accounts to see if we can apply some additional refunds.

That said, please update this comment with your ticket number and we'll get back to you ASAP. Otherwise, thanks for your time here. Have a good day.

I found the content of Scribd to be pretty scattered when looking for a specific piece of information. I also found that one should never give their credit card number to these people. I canceled in June, my subscription should have expired by July. I had a recurring debit posted to my account. I decided to go back and check my cancellation. Low and behold, there was an extra added step that you have to pay attention too. I just received the third recurring charge. I had to call my bank to have this stopped. Go to hell scribd. Oh! It's wrong that 1/2 stars are not available.

They give you a "trial" then they don't acknowledge your cancellation. So they just keep charging. I've been trying to cancel since December with no success. They don't answer phones and they make it impossible for you to contact them. STAY AWAY unless you like their service.

Scribd.com used to be a great website when you could download books and resources. Enter the New York Times, which called the website out in May in an article about books' being illegally uploaded. Since then, the site has become a dumping ground for college essays and second-rate novels. However, for my educator purposes, I can sometimes find good materials like activity books for the kids or resources about autism for Spanish-speaking parents.

Decided to turn to this website after several tickets on the Scribd website with no response still. I had a payment taken on the 23/5 through Paypal, my account still says I am a non member and can not continue to read any of the books I want to. Very frustrating customer service with no number to call? Ticket ID's: *******, *******,*******.

Hi Lauren - I'm so sorry for the delay in responding. I've personally taken over the ticket and issued a refund for your unexpected charge, which was from a duplicate account you created. If you have any other questions, please reply to the email I sent and I'm happy to keep helping!

Honestly stay away from this website. I got an Email back in March confirming that my subscription was cancelled. They alread took 9,99€ in April, Mai and June... And Juli is on it's way.

Wrote them an E-Mail, no reply. They say it can take up to a week to reply.

Support says they are in high demand right now... No wonders since they scam everybody.

After I cancelled the intial free subscription I have been billed each month without my permission. I hope others are contacting consumer affairs as I am.

This is a complete scam.

I have emailed 6 times but suprisingly no answers.

I will be contacting my bank to stop these unauthorised withdrawals from my account and to seek redress.

Regarding your reply to my initial review - I do not believe your response details - if you had any integrity, you would immediately fix your cancellation procedure, and enable customers wishing to cancel their membership to do so immediately and completely!

Hello Sitejabber Team

Why have you deleted my initial review about scribd.com?

Since I responded to their reply, by posting an answer, my original review which would have contained their reply, has disappeared.

I don't have any idea how this site got a hold of my credit card, probably I thought I was getting a free trial for some manual I needed. But they learned how to lay low and keep charging your credit card, they never send an e-mail or an acknowledgement of any type. Sneaky, sleazy and Immoral.

I signed up with a one-year gift subscription in March '20, and after about 4 months of normal service, the gift card got deleted from the account for no reason. There is no response to several requests to the support desk (support ticket #*******), and no way to reach a human. It is a very frustrating experience.

Thumbnail of user jerryg31
Scribd S. – Scribd Rep

Hi there, thanks for reaching out about this. We apologize for the delay as we've recently received a higher than normal amount of requests and our system is in a backlog. Our support team is working as quickly as possible to take care of these. With that being said, we located several tickets opened by you and our system automatically merged the duplicates into your primary ticket, under #2895005. A specialist has reviewed your account and resolved this issue, and has sent a follow up with more information. Please continue to correspond with us via email moving forward so we may best assist you.

Additionally, as a gentle reminder for the future, there is no need to create multiple support tickets. This backs up our system and creates extra, unnecessary confusion among agents and the user alike. We can ensure that your issue is resolved in a timely manner with only a single ticket, as creating additional ones does not speed up this process. Thanks!

I once had a subscription, paid for it and cancelled. Unfortunately I gave them my credit card number. When I just accessed the site two years later, my subscription was immediatlely renewed without me even being asked. Now they kept charging me their monthly fee. Saw no other possibility than changing my credit card.

I cancelled my membership before my free trial even ended because I was not using it too often. I double-checked and then didn't think about it anymore. I've just found out that they've been charging my cards since then. Not a single email sent to inform me that I was even going to be charged. I have no idea if I will even even get my money back anymore but for the love of god do not get it subscribe unless you are absolutely sure that you will be using it a lot.

I have been a subscriber for years and always find something new to read or listen to. Scribd has probably saved me thousands of pounds on books over the years and hours waiting for them to turn up in my local library. I like that I can dip into anything I fancy and then wander off onto something else if I don't find it engaging without the clutter and commitment of having to pay for a physical item. It's perfect for someone like me with adhd and a wandering inquisitive mind.

This website has committed fraudulence on hundreds of people. I have had $83.54 stolen from me. THIS IS A SCAM! I urge anyone who is thinking about subscribing to this website, to look away immediately. I hate this because I am a broke, college kid who pays for school independently! I had never even heard of the website until I saw monthly charges on my account! And no, Jerry G, I don't need or want your response. Hey Ashley - We apologize for any confusion or frustration here! Just to clarify, Scribd does not "sign up" or "start subscriptions" for our users without their consent. In order for someone to have an active subscription with us, the only way to do so would be for them to sign up when creating an account or restart/renew their membership from their Account Settings page. I was actually so impressed with their digital library and selection of audiobooks that I joined for a year prepaid well before the expiration of a 60 day trial period. I initially quite liked their app, also. Today Scribd removed an audiobook from my library that I was already listening to because I started a second book, which was a short story. Now they tell me that my book will not be available to me again for another ten days. All of the books that I had saved for future reading were removed from my library. Access is not unlimited.

I was trying to sign up for the free 30-day trial, and there were a few problems when it suddenly went straight to credit card information and then created a fake account that I can't access. I even tried linking it to my facebook, but every time I log in it doesn't show up. Worst of all, my credit card information is now on the account, on the website, I can't access the account, and I am being charged. When I was able to be on the account, I tried everything to stop the membership or change the credit card information, but nothing is working. I have never had a problem with Scribd before, and now its completely $#*!ting on me. I've contacted, or tried, and nothing back. They are literally stealing from me now, and I can't do a single thing about it.

I cancelled my Scribd account two months ago, but I am continually being charged $12.53 every month for the past two months for an account that I don't even use. After reading several reviews of other people experiencing the exact same thing as I am, I am sending another message regarding this issue.
I have bank statements stating that I am being charged. It also says on the scribd website that I am not subscribed to any service and that I don't have a card on file.
I have an order number as well if this is required to receive refunds for the charges.
I would very much appreciate a refund and an explanation as to why I am continually being charged when my account was cancelled so long ago.

Horrible company. I too was continued to be charged a monthly fee after I closed my account. I was ignored repeatedly with my request for refund and confirmation of account closed (I already had email confirmation from representative but that did not stop the charge's). This website is a fraud. You have to click 10 times to cancel the trial, i thought i cancelled it, but it looks like i didn't click that tiny button at the last page. They will ask you several times if you 'actually' want to cancel your subscription which is scammy as hell.
And scribd support probably doesn't even read requests, so maybe their pr person will see this message.
