“Surprisingly good”

Dominik K.

Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.

“Not even worthy of one star!”

Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.

As a concept, Scribd WAS fantastic. Originally, I signed up for the technical papers but I immediately fell in love with the ability to read any book I wanted anytime.

That is, until March 21. The update was forced, meaning I couldn't open Scribd until I updated the app. Now, I can't even access the book I am almost finished with.

Every time I open a book, it counts as one of my allocated books. I even if I sneak a peek, I 'm committed. I understand changing business models, but really? This was poorly executed. I would not be surprised if the subscriber base decreases dramatically. I will definitely consider unsubscribing if this isn't changed back.

I have no recollection of signing up for this account. I actually have had no knowledge of this service because I have never been sent a receipt for my monthly subscriptions. I have no idea how they got my credit card info, but 2 years and $200 later, here we are. So disappointed.

I have canceled my subscription and I received an email to that effect. I am still charged from May till now. You can't get to customer service or support service. While chatting with customer support, they will refer you to contact support( There is no phone number to contact support). There is no phone number. Scribd is fraudulent. Don't get caught up in this scam.

Hello Omolara, I apologize for any inconvenience, however at this time we do not offer phone support. We are more than happy to help you via email. If you received confirmation your subscription was canceled it was either renewed or there is a duplicate account causing these charges. I will need to look into your account to be sure it is canceled. Please submit a ticket through this link and your request will be escalated straight to my inbox: bit.ly/social-support-help. Once we confirm it is not causing the charges I will help locate the account responsible.
Thanks! -LC

I cancelled my Scribd account in October and the charges stopped. However, in January they started charging me again for every month till may. When I emailed them about it, they said they could not find the charge or my account despite me sending them the email, username, last 4 digits of my card, and even a screenshot of my scribd account. Then they asked for the expiration date of my card as well as the first 6 digits of the card! It feels very shady and I have since disputed the issue with the help of my bank.

Thumbnail of user jerryg31
Scribd S. – Scribd Rep

Hi Raweel, thank you for your feedback. We're sorry for the difficulties you experienced with canceling your subscription and that our team was unable to locate your account. Our agents ask for the first 6 digits of a card as a last resort when card information is too similar to other customers. With thousands of transactions coming in daily from customers world-wide, many numbers can appear almost identical. Scribd has security measures in place that prevents us from viewing full card details to keep your information safe. We will absolutely never ask for the entire card number.

We understand your concern, however, the first 6 digits of a card number is the best option we have to verify that one of the accounts our agents are viewing is indeed the subscription that has been charging you. Again, this is always a last resort option since we never want to get to the point where we say that we can't help you.

If you have further questions for Scribd, feel free to reach out to us.

I signed up to use the site, but found it wasn't worth it. So, I cancelled my membership. The website correctly says "Your scribd membership has expired"... BUT I just realized they have been charging my credit card every month since I quit in September. I'm now logging them as fraudulent on my credit card site.

This used to be a great service. After the most recent changes now it's just a piece of garbage. While the site professes to be user friendly, it makes it very difficult to cancel. What was a great business model is now simply going to become a failed business what a shame.

My account got overdrafted today, and, shocked, I went to see why. Curiously, for at least 3 months now I have been getting charged 9.99 for a scribd membership. What made this suspicious to me is that every month it id filed under a different category.one month it's music, the next it's Other/Business. I have tried my facebook account, as well as every email I own and I am still getting charged. I guess if I were to be contacted, use my email: *******@hotmail.com. Until then, I will be disputing this charge.

I dare you to try to find a way to talk to a human at this company. There is no number to be found. And it is so many steps to cancel, but they sure make it easy to take your money and increase your fee. It is deceptive advertising to make it appear free. People are not stupid. The company should take note there are almost 800 1.5 average reviews here.

A month after I signed up & agreed to pay $8.99/mo... They changed the rules from $8.99 per mo. To $8.95 per BOOK! Anyone who even considers signing up w/ scribd... Instead, do what I am now doing. Apply online for a library card on your local County Library Website & read and/or listen to as many Ebooks/Audiobooks as you want per month for FREE. You don't even have to go to the library... It's all done online. Why pay scribd for a service that your County Library offers for FREE. I wish someone had told me about the Public Library's FREE Ebook/Audiobook Service BEFORE I got hooked up with those Scribd crooks!

I signed up for scribd and like everyone else keep getting charged despite cancelling. Company is horrible and says they will only refund 30 days despite charging me for a full 4 months. I would like a full refund

Tip for consumers:
When you cancel scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and keep checking for a confirmation email. If they do not send you one its not cancelled. You also will have to contact customer support by phone to ensure it actually get cancelled. Horrible site

Tried the free trial for a book I needed for research. When I can't view the book I decided to cancel but they decided to charge me for the next billing period. What would I do with this for an extra month if I can't view the book I need? And why charge people during their free trial? Some would say that it's a "pending charge" but no it states on my account that my trial was cancelled during at the end of my 30 day trial even though I cancelled before the 30 days. What a scam.

I signed up for a trial and then I deleted my account, but after a month they charged me for a subscription and account that doesn't exist. I have written a lot of emails, but without any answer. How is it possible that I pay for something that doesn't exist and I can't log in because this account is deleted?

I signed up for the 30 days free trial. After couple of days, I canceled my account. When I checked my credit card, there was a charged. I was upset. I reported the charges to my credit card. My credit card asked me to work with Scribd. I tried, but I got no response. The next month, I saw another charge. I decided to go back on the site and put in my user name and password. It showed the account was "inactive." How can you charge me for a service you did not perform? I sent them another request. No response! After reading your comments and reviews, I'm starting to wonder how many many people did they do this too? At this point I am seeking legal help. It may be chump change to others. But it's the principle. Can you imagine how many people went through this thinking its only $10. I will contact my credit card again. Anyways, I was charged twice for a service that was not performed.

I signed up for the free membership because it was stated that they will send an email to me to remind to cancel my subscription once the free trial will be up soon. However, I received no email from them and they proceeded to charge my PayPal $9.62. Wasn't the price supposed to be $8.99? Extremely disappointed in their service.

I've been using this service for about a year after getting a free trial to listen to an audiobook I couldn't find through my library app. I have never had to wait until the next month to access an audiobook I wanted, and I usually listen to six or more books in the span of a few weeks. The price is really fair for the selection and availability. I do wish it were easier to search books by series in the app like you can in Overdrive. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the service... and this is coming from a total penny pincher.

I thought I cancelled it, but it looks like I did not.

The reason is that when I click on cancel membership, I am taken to the next page with no clear sign it isn't done. Even though there is no clear sign you need to scroll down to continue cancelling, it's still needed.

Why can't you be more honest about this process, detailing everything one needs to do, so nothing like this happens? I am sure I am not the only one with this problem, check out this article: https://the-digital-reader.com/2015/07/03/psa-have-you-cancelled-your-account-at-scribd-you-might-want-to-double-check-that/.

So apparently customer service only helps you until you actually need a refund. Just noticed that I had 6 months of charges on my credit card and had never signed up. They couldn't find any account for me under any of my emails nor my credit card number. Finally found an account for me under someone else's email and asked if I recognized the email. I said it wasn't my email and that I wanted a refund of the 6 months and also my credit card taken off that account to prevent any further charges. I got an email back from customer service saying "Ok so you say it's not your email but do you recognize it?". No! If I recognized it I would have said something. I reiterated that it wasn't mine, I didn't recognize it and wanted my refund. Up until then they had been answering my other emails after about 12 hours. Once it got to the last one, nothing. I emailed them back two different times and nothing. I can't believe they are still in business with this many complaints.

They are cunning. It would take you three steps to cancel subscription. In each steps you have to scroll at the bottom of page and click continue cancellation. It's shrewdly designed to make you fell you I've canceled the subscription but it continued. I almos paid for 9 months. My mistake that I was not checking the credit card statement.

I have subscribed as it was written 3$ for annual subscription, however per month was lightly visible. They charged 50$ without informing and saved payment card details, and the book I wanted to read is a sample copy not the original book. I have written them to refund but no reply yet and there is no contact number to reach. This site is Fraud and I am very frustated that I have even visited this site.

Tip for consumers:
Thanks Scribd.com for restoring my faith ,I got the refund little less though.

Eventually when I realised the overcharge I asked to be refunded the amount charged in excess but I only received 9.99 pds refund! I complained several times but they are insisting to say that I did not cancel in time. NEVER used then again and suggest you do the same too!

I I downloaded one page of sheet music from Scribd once using a free membership. I haven't used the site since. However, the company converted my free membership to a full membership without notifying me, and then charged me monthly fees without emailing me to let me know. I noticed a few months in and canceled my membership and assumed it was taken care of. Several months after that I tried to cancel again, this time via email instead of the online form. It still didn't work. They've refused to reimburse me for the full amount and only offered to return a small portion of what I paid.

I think that this method of hidden membership activation and credit card charges is unethical and (I imagine) illegal.
