“Surprisingly good”

Dominik K.

Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.

“Not even worthy of one star!”

Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.

I joined on the basis of a book they claimed to have which was quite rare.
They didn't actually have so I tried many times to cancel membership. I then tried to delete membership and was told I could not on the basis of having an active membership. I though having it cancelled would be enough.

However, months later I was charged $71 on my paypal for yearly membership. I initiated an unauthorised complaint with paypal. I went to scribd tried to cancel subscription yet again and delete membership. Same result as before.

I then complained to scribd on their customer service page only to then find it case closed with no communication with me whatsoever. I went back to paypal to find they tried to charge me again. Fortunately this time paypal blocked it.

I have initiated more complaints on their customer service page requesting a refund. I am waiting for paypal to resolve an unauthorised payment/fraud complaint to see if I can get my money back there.

This is a scam operation with dishonest business practices, traps to prevent one leaving and, essentially practices fraud, charging more than once for the same subscription I did not want anyway and advertising books it does not actually have. (I think it has a system on google where it directs you there for book searches regardless of whether they actually have it.)

Stay away at all costs!

Update: Paypal found in my favour and I have now been refunded.

I'm on week 3 of no resolution and I'm frustrated to tears. No matter what I do, my voice is not heard. I'm a college student that lost my job during covid. I've used all my savings to take care of my family, what little money I have, I need. I signed up for a free trial to look at one book related to a school project and I cancelled the subscription afterwards, or so I thought. Then I become sick and did not closely look at my credit card bills. I never got any emails asking if I wanted to be subscribed and no reminders. In all the months I was subscribed to scribd, I only got one email that looked like a spam email asking to rate my satisfaction with Scribd. There is no mention in this email about being signed up for a subscription. To my horror one day, I noticed a billing for scrubs and I think, what on earth is Scribd?! Scribd has been charging my credit card for months and refuses to refund me these months of an unused subscription. The customer service person told me that they can see that I never accessed the site. They refunded 1 month but I need all my money back. A multi million dollar company took what little money I have and won't give it back. They offered me a free trial and did not make it clear once you took advantage of the tree trial and unsuccessfully unsubscribe that you were in fact subscribed. No emails were sent notifying my that I was subscribed. They then made a policy in which they refuse to refund your money.

Hi Jaclyn, we're sorry for the frustrating experience. We are unable to process refunds outside of our 30-day Refund Policy guidelines (https://support.scribd.com/hc/articles/210133986) due to limits that are set entirely by our payment processor's parameters. To put it simply, we are physically unable to access or edit transactions that are older than 30 days. We apologize for any inconvenience that this causes. However, we can confirm that your subscription has been canceled successfully and you will not be charged again as we cannot bill an account that's no longer rendering services with us. Thanks for your understanding here, and have a wonderful day!

Your cancelation procedure is obviously ment to trick people (me) into believing one is ready canceling when there is more steps to go, more buttons to click. 5-6 months I payed extra due to believing I had already canceled the membership. Foolish. /Fredrik Linander

I am disputing with my bank. I canceled my subscription on May 25, which was resolved and closed on May 27th. It should've ended on June 18th. I was charged AGAIN on June 19th. I'm having to get a new bank card in order to keep this from happening again. I was considering coming back, but no longer.

I signed up for a trial in May 2018 and cancelled it within a month. However, without my knowing they've been silently charging me for a subscription for the past 2 years. When I log back into my account it says that I ended my subscription back in 2018. So why am I being charged exactly? I contacted customer service and there has been no response. This seems unlawful. I will be contacting my bank shortly if this is not resolved soon. And no I do not have a duplicate account. That is a blatant lie that you've been telling everyone here. I've checked all of my other email accounts and none of them have a record with Scribd. You're using that as an excuse to justify only refunded a month's payment.

Edit: Support ticket is #*******. You're going to tell me that I have a duplicate account under the same payment information. But I'm going to tell you that I do not have a duplicate account and that I have checked all my emails and any way I could have made a duplicate account and I have not. I don't have another account. What is your explanation now?

I needed a book for a project I was working on and found scribd. I read a lot anyway so the service sounded awesome... it was (subjectively) meh. I cancelled my free trial/membership, deleted the account and then forgot all about it. I signed up using a UK bank card that I never use since I live abroad and thus never really check my balance. When i did check my balance several months later I was VERY surprised to see that I was being charged by Scribd. Confused, i go to the site to see whats going on. I try to log in with my email address and password only to be told my account has been deleted (as i thought it had). IF MY ACCOUNT HAS BEEN DELETED, HOW THE HELL CAN THEY BE CHARGING ME A MONTHLY FEE. I've tried to begin a dialogue with them about being refunded, but apparently they don't refund after a certain amount of time. Complete scam.

Scribd got away with charging my credit card for 5 months before I noticed it. Luckily the credit card company was able to get Scribd to refund my money. The problem is I never signed up for their service in the first place. Company like this make millions off charging unsuspecting people.
It seems that we buy something on one website not knowing that it has a sister company that will take our credit card information and charge us for services we never ordered. The most common trick is when we go to checkout and buy our merchandise, in the checkout area the company has a box pre-checked with small print next to it tricking us into signing up for something we don't need or want. I'm so tired of these scams on unsuspecting consumers. There needs to be a detailed Federal Regulations preventing this type of consumer scam by companies. I remember years ago T-mobile did the same thing to me; adding charges for things I never ordered. Because of what they did to me I now use prepaid service for my family through Total Wireless. This way I can avoid fraudulent charges since it is a paid in advance service. Scribd Inc is just another rip off corporation scamming innocent consumers.

Scribd S. – Scribd Rep

Hi Marc - I'm sorry to hear about your unexpected charges. Scribd does not have a "sister" company and we certainly would not take your credit card details from another site and sign you up on our site; this just isn't possible. Most likely, you signed up for a subscription with us and forgot to cancel, which is why you received the charges. In the future, please email us at help@scribd.com and we'll be happy to locate your charges and issue a refund! Thank you!

I sign up occasionally for a month at a time. This time though, I recieved an email that I would be charged for the next month on July 10th. So on July 9th I went in to cancel my account and found they had already extended my membership for next month and charged me. I sent them an email complaining and my next step will be to do a chargeback with my credit card, but they've obviously resorted to dirty practices by doing this. I won't be signing up again.

I unsubscribed from this service a month after joining to use a single textbook for a university essay I was writing in DECEMBER 2022... NOPE, never mind. Flash forward to SEPTEMBER 2023 and I see a sneaky lil $14.55 on my Scotia app... Check back months and months and I'm being charged again and again for a service I DID NOT USE and UNSUBSCRIBED from. Absolute dog$#!t. How can this company continue to operate with reviews that repeat over and over that people were SCAMMED? Life is hard enough, trying to pay rent, groceries, wifi, phone, etc... already drowning without scam artists taking MY hard earned money. This is such garbage. I hope those who work for this disgusting company get what they deserve. I know I won't get a refund, though I and the others who have complained should. Learn how to run an honest company you DECEITFUL SCUM. Respectfully, I hope it is slow and painful when the time comes :)

Scribd S. – Scribd Rep

Hi Trilochan! We've just replied to your support ticket, but I'm providing this information here for you as well. I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding! It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support.

I think they were better off with the credit system. With this "so called" *unlimited model, after consuming just a couple of audiobooks you are left with a very paltry selection of content of either librovox style recordings or other types of uninteresting titles until the renewal of your next billing cycle. I can understand the need for a business to turn a profit, but you need to be clear on how many books from certain publishers you can access before you are cut off from the good content. Now choosing an audiobook from Scribd is kind of like walking on eggshells because I have to be careful which books may or may not set off the algorithm that will limit your selections. It's my understanding that they refuse to be clear on this. They pretty much just come back with canned responses to anybody who contacts them to complain.
I have come to find that my local library has a great wealth of content that is ready available which can tide me over until I can access the best selling titles on the wait list. If on a rare occasion there is something that I have an absolute urge to read now, I can always just purchase it on Google play. I think that may be more cost effective than paying $9 a month for a service that doesn't really deliver what it claims to.
I would come back to Scribd if they would either
A) Make the service TRULY unlimited (even if I had to pay a little more) or
B) Clarify which content and the quantity of that content that can be consumed in a month, so that one can plan accordingly.
I don't get how this works, it's too confusing and seemingly arbitrary.

Hi, I'm Niranjana (Niren) Upreti. I signed up may be a month ago. I was looking for audio book for Push by Sapphire. When i couldn't find it. I Unsubscribe it and i think i deleted the account also. Today, i checked my bank statement, it showed I have been charged for re-subscribing Monthly plan. Now, when I'm trying to login with my email it says no account is registered with this email. This is insane. I tried contacting their phone number. It ended saying not to waste time calling. Seriously!
This is an absolute scam. I would like to get my money refunded. If not I'm gonna take a legal action for charging on my unsubscribed account which is probably deleted. I have never made any kind of purchase from scribd. I have attached my statement of being charged by scribd its at the bood of statement. I'm charged $8.99

Tip for consumers:
I would not recoment this site. Beacuse this site charges you even after unsubscribing or deleting the account.

Products used:
just read a free book with the tittle- Push by Sapphire.

I have had a membership with Scribd for 7 months... I noticed about 4 months ago that the last week before my monthly payment is due, every audiobook I have saved is suddenly not available- until the day AFTER my payment is due. This has happened every month! They claim that there is no limit to the books and audiobooks that there members can read / listen to, but obviously there must be. This has happened every month and not only my saved audiobooks and also any audiobooks from any of the series that I read are suddenly not available, but also all titles that use the "Search" option for are not available either.
The only way to contact customer service is by email- which I did. They responded with an email saying that it would be 2 weeks or more until they would get to my complaint.
When I reread their terms, etc., they just make a general statement about availability. It is so obvious that this dishonest practice of making everything unavailable the last week before my payment is due is intentional. It is so obvious, especially since my selections become available as soon as the next payment is made. It's not like this happened once or twice, it happens like clockwork EVERY MONTH. This is horrible and dishonest!

Tip for consumers:
Be aware of their "availability" issue.

I used my debit card on the site for nearly a year without incident. The site doesn't save many books that I tried to save so I had to bookmark them, they are no unlimited and the audio on audiobooks frequently goes out. They have a nice selection of books so I dealt with technical glitches.
I tried to make my 1st attempt to do auto payments on my credit card and had to freeze my credit card. I have to contact Experian because they made it look like I was trying to max out my card. The first charge of $100 went through and they refunded but then kept trying to charge.
They don't have a phone number so I have to wait and hope someone helps me. When I tried to log into my account it was gone and they thanked me for signing up yet they were still making several attempts to charge my card! Don't bother with this company or if you do use a visa gift card or something. They offer a bunch of crappy perks that don't even work most of the time but can't work out bugs on their website and have no phone number?! It's the largest internet library and no phone #? It's shady and seems to be a scam. Hope Audible crushes them.
