“Surprisingly good”

Dominik K.
7/10/23

Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.

Top Critical Review

“Not even worthy of one star!”

J. R.
3/18/24

Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.

Hi Afolabi, Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry for any confusion our cancellation process may have caused. That is not the experience we want our subscribers to have.

With that being said, once an account is canceled, our system is unable to debit your account for the subscription service. If you are still being billed this is likely due to the account not being canceled properly.

No worries though, we can definitely take care of this for you and ensure your account is canceled as well as look into your refund inquiry.

To further assist you please contact our support team here: https://scr.bi/assist and one of our agents will assist you -MR

First, They misrepresent their plan. It's extremely limited. Note: I DO NOT CONSIDER blocking any title from access as unlimited. It's misleading. They do have a section that is indeed unlimited. You can find most of them on the net for free. Other titles both audio and ebook are INDEED limited. For example, I'm now blocked from listening to any more Rebus series titles for the rest of the month after listening to two. I can listen again IF I renewed in November on the 18th [not happening.] This is NOT unlimited. Frankly since 95% of the unlimited section can be found free, the question is why would I bother paying for what costs nothing?

For over $100 a year you get 24 audiobooks and pretty much close to the same number of books. For the entire year. That's the limit (we won't count assorted docs uploaded about various crap including samples with "buy the full" ads. So it isn't unlimited. Appears someone in their office needs to buy a dictionary. Around 2.25 an item.

Second, for 50 bucks, I can join the Brooklyn public library (any where in the USA. Open to US only) for a year. I can access their overdrive and several other digital collections from anywhere in the United States. I can check out 15 items every seven days if I choose just from their overdrive collection. 780 books a year. 15 from their bibliotheca collection; another 780 books a year. 1560 books just from two collections offered. Cost?. 032 cents a book. PS. If you live in NY? It is free. Their overdrive counts over 100,000 books alone not counting the rest.
Edited to add: I forgot to add that they also have videos, music and offer free access to things such as Mango language app.

Will update if they pull the charge after cancellation in November. So far it says free trial ends November 18th.

Scribd is overpriced and way overrated. And a very poor model.

I must have signed up for a free trial over a year ago. So that would be on me even though I don't recall it.

But what is criminal is charging people without ANY correspondence! I didn't know I had an account, if I did I could have used it or cancelled it. But the fact is I didn't know, they didn't send any email about this account, and charged me for over a year without a receipt to know it was going on.

As a neurodivergent person who has serious issues with memory, I rely on correspondence and communication between companies and people I deal with. Scribd has just been cutting my purse strings for over a year, stealing from me from my point of view. I didn't know this account existed. Didn't use it a single time during the 15mo I was charged.

You've taken advantage of me, stolen money I need for medical purposes, and offered no service to me as I've been completely unaware of this site during the entire billing period.

Yes, the world is made for neurotypical people and nobody gives a $#*! about the disabled, I should have noticed my transactions earlier. And this is my general responsibility in the world we live in, but my neurology doesn't lead me to checking transactions often as I rarely use the card on purpose, and have never had a subscription to anything charged to my card like this before. So it was entirely new to have a recurring cost lurking in my transactions. Again, without any email receipts or notifications about the service, new offerings. What kind of business doesn't contact its own members!

Yes, I bear some responsibility. But your underhanded business practice seems by design. I'm shocked. I'll be reporting to my ombudsman, the better business bureau, and using my autistic powers to let every forum, rating and review site know what kind of shady hidden business you run. I will track my work in an excel I've opened and if I ever hear back I can notify these other sites, reviews and persons with how you respond to being called out on bad business practice.

No receipts!?! This will now consume my day as I can't stop myself from beating myself up internally when these kinds of things happen. I hope you got into business to cause distress, because if so you're doing great.

Tip for consumers:
It would have helped me to know that they do not send receipts or correspondence of any kind. So unless you know you have this account, they'll never remind you or tell you that your bill is due, they'll just charge the card and keep doing it every month forever, hoping you don't notice you're being charged.

Products used:
Nothing. I looked at a few PDFs during a free trial I suspect. But have no memory of using the site.

Cancelled my account on 06th, they try to take money on 28th of previous month. Today I updated my card with money and 3 hours later baam took all 11$ from account without 0 consent. Mailed them today, No option to remove my card, only update details. How the hell im gonna get a new card for scam people. I need my money back and please delete my account. I dont want to be at any scam website. There moto is to dupe students money during COVID-19 pandemic.
EDIT: After chat, they promptly refunded me the money with 0 hassles
EDIT2(23/7/2020)- Since there was no option to delete my payment method I kept my card empty just in case and today on going through charges on the card, they again tried to take my money on 15th and 16th of this month respectively. Now I dont know how the system works but this is seriously flawed and made to take money. I lost nearly $2 more for Point of decline transaction, I know its not much to people but here i can get 1 day's meal for that. So this matters to me a lot. Please refrain from adding anything on your account.

Like other angry people on here have mentioned, these people are thieves. I never started a "membership", only signed in with my facebook for a one time use type of situation because it was quick and easy. And this is exactly how they get people! I don't even use their website, have never uploaded my credit card info, yet somehow they have my credit card number on file and have been charging me for MONTHS. There was never any email about starting a membership or the charges, and when I try to remove my credit card info, there is no option to do so! What in the absolute $#*! is wrong with this company? Have you no morals? AND WHAT'S WORSE? THE SAME THING HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO MY BOYFRIEND WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE FOR 5 YEARS! 5 YEARS! We are students living paycheck to paycheck THAT IS A LOT OF $#*!ING MONEY YOU ARE ROBBING FROM US FOR SOMETHING WE NEVER WERE NOTIFIED WE WERE BEING CHARGED FOR AND WE ARE NOT USING! CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING MILLIONS OFF OF UNSUSPECTING PEOPLE. Absolute monsters. I would very much like to be refunded, as would my boyfriend. My email is *******@gmail.com though I am thinking no one will actually follow up on this issue...

Hello , I subscribed for a trial subscription, Start date:6-Mar-2018 -End date5-Apr-2018.
On 5th of April , automatically charged $11.91 CAD. No alerts or emails alerts prior to renewal . I did nt find useful the service so I thought of cancelling the subscription . end of march I got sick and missed to cancel subscription . As there was no email alerts warning customers about renewal . I missed fully . This is the what scribd expect to happen to customers .on April 11th , while checking credit card statement i noticed scribd charges and immediately cancelled subscription and submitted 2 tickets to scribd support ticket #*******.& support ticket #*******]. then tried to reach their support phone no . Then only I realized this is 100 % cheating . They dont accept any phone calls . only emails & msg posts . Then why the heck they providing phone no . my 1st ticket one person just marked the case as "solved" no reply nothing . second ticket , one lady replied back saying , they cannot re-fund . because I used . How come . What non -sense is this ? . 30 days it was trial with zero charges . then before charging on 5th april , no alerts nothing . Then when customer cancelled subscription and requesting refund . scribd not even bothered to return money back . Now my money is gone .
Fraud aspect is that , they are charging me for the next 30 days cycle . even if cancel they are not returning money back . Is this company doing this shady business based out of US. I'm surprised .I request people residing in usa, to bring this before officials so people wont lose their hard earned money . I humbly request ,people residing in USA , is stop this fraud happening . This company has no right to say , you used so we cannot refund . Irrespective of whether I used or not used , they are obliged to refund .

Tip for consumers:
I spoke to Paypal and requested not to pay scribd.
Paypal took decision in my favor.

Verified purchase

My free trial was from 09/13/23 to 110/13/23.

I canceled 10/11/23.

Attached is proof of these dates.

On 10/17/23, after receiving multiple attempts from Scribd to charge my card 11.99, my bank froze my card. They thought it was suspicious. Possibly fraudulent. Luckily my account was nearly empty, so they couldn't take money out.

Now I can either: somehow get Scribd to commit to NOT charging me, unfreeze my card against ALL advice from my bank and the rest of these reviews (which tell me Scribd will continue to charge my card long after my "free" trial is over), or mark the charges as fraud, cancel my card, and get another. Leaning toward to latter, as I'll likely never trust my card again after seeing that others get charged YEARS after cancelling.

This is ridiculous. I didn't even have a paid subscription. I had a free trial that I canceled early, yet they still charged me? It seems more like a business practice than a mistake, considering how many people have similar complaints, how long they've been coming in, how difficult it is to cancel at all, and how hard it seems to be to get in contact with anyone. People aren't even getting their renewal reminders.

PSA: A company that makes it hard to leave is a company that's hard to trust. Every design choice is intentional. I'm a software engineer. The website's layout, with a veritable labyrinth before you hit the REAL cancellation page, was specifically built to keep people from leaving. I'm not buying the "duplicate account" schtick as the cause of the fraudulent charges either.

At this point, Scribd is either maliciously stealing people's money or shamefully negligent with their users' account and billing information. I'm not sure which is worse.

I've spent the last couple days wondering why I couldn't use my card to get basic necessities like groceries. And to hear that it's Scribd?

Watch your back and your wallets everyone.

We'd be happy to further investigate this to ensure there's not another account linked to those attempted charges, or to merge your accounts if we do find a duplicate responsible for the charge attempt, so if you still need assistance then please don't hesitate to create a new support ticket using this link: http://bit.ly/social-support-help.
