“Finding a care giver”

Patty S.
10/4/24

I did find a caregiver. But, I thought the site was difficult to navigate. Using the site for the first time was very challenging. I also think it is quite expensive although I didn't know how to find a caregiver any other way besides going through a company and that way you don't always get quality people. So maybe paying a bit more will be worth it in the end. I am hopeful.

“Charged for Service that did not occur”

Kristina S.

I sent a request for pet sitting, however the provider could not accommodate the request, care.com still charged me. There is no phone number and they make it difficult to connect to discuss issues, you email and wait for a response. Horrible customer care

I suppose technically I'm wrong because buried in the fine print is a term/agreement that says the purchase signs me up for automatic subscription renewal. I find it to be an unethical business practice to not make that fact plain and clear. I purchased what I thought would be a three month subscription and today, three months later, my card has just been charged again. There is no phone number to call, and even if there were, the fine print is on their side. I'd bet 50% of their monthly revenue comes from unsuspecting people like me and that is not okay. I've learned my lesson. I'm sorry they're going to dup so many others that haven't learned theirs yet.

Signed up this morning, paid the premium amount for 3 months. Attempted to message a sitter and received errors. Started a chat to figure out what's going on and apparently my account is closed with my payment pending. The payment has already hit my bank too so not sure how this has happened. The person has no answer for me and claims they'll check into it and email me back but they have no clue when. I came to this site as a last attempt to find before care for my son that I urgently need and it's been nothing but headache since. Your fees are way too high to be dealing with this level of issues. Based on my morning working with Care.com, I would like to have given 0 stars. But apparently that's not possible.

First off, they are just trying to get money from you, but the number of families I was contacted buy who didn't even bother to interview me just wanted to hire me with very little notice was staggering. If I asked a question they were never heard from again. If you're looking to flush money down the toilet go ahead and sign up for care.com, the positive reviews are probably bots because I doubt a single real person using this site actually has great luck on it.

The site setup is crap, paying to see responses is a ploy, and $20 a month is way too much. Just signing up was a hassle as it asked for the same info several times. They send so many emails it's spam. Job posts are vague and some offer payment that's less than minimum wage. How does that even make sense? If you're paying $20/month just for the website why would you agree to less than min. Wage an hour? Ridiculous.

I've been working for people there for years. One person kept me on hold, being flaky, hiring and then postponing for two months. At the last week of the two month period he flaked again, therefore I was out a job and did not get paid for training. This guy didn't want to pay me so he called Care.com and they disconnected my service without investigation. So now I'm out the money and a job for two months. NEVER did anything wrong as anyone can tell by the text messages. Disgusting Company! They could care less about anyone! Anyone know an attorney? Class Action for sure!

I got signed up for a higher level "membership" without my approval. I thought I was paying $12 mo. Now it's billing. Me for $155? For a year? Not Happy. Can't find out who or where to contact about correcting this. Previous experiences with business were all positive, previously.

Hi Susan, We are a paid subscription service and not a free service. I'm sorry if you thought otherwise and therefore felt mislead. That was never our intention. Many sites like ours charge a fee in order to be able to offer you the features our site offers. Otherwise we'd just be like any other free classified site with very little to offer. When you choose a12 month membership, you are shown before you purchase that you are billed for the full duration of the membership upfront. If you are a Premium member or have a current booking, you can always live chat with us through the Contact Us button found at help.care.com as well as reach out to us via our phone number listed on your credit card statement. Care.com would be better if it did not allow care givers to terminate their profile and sign up again for the purpose of shaking off bed reviews. I think this is a reckless practice that may lead to harming some family that does not see prior reviews. We trust our children to these providers and some are unreliable. There must be error in safety and providers should be "stuck" with their bad choices they have made.

Care.com misleads consumers and profits off of busy parents. A one-month subscription is actually an infinite subscription because buried in the fine print is language that allows the company to "automatically renew" the subscription every month thereafter. My credit card was charged around $40 every month for many months until I noticed the erroneous charge on a statement. As a busy working mother, I do not have the time or mental energy to comb through every charge every month; Care.com knows this and counts on it. Erroneously charging people who are looking for help is at the heart of their business model. Use community sites, church bulletins, or local avenues to find caregivers as much as you can instead of this predatory service.

I feel like an idiot. Why did I bother with a premium account? Seems like these job postings are NOT legit. These people never hire anyone or even frequent the site... hmmm! It's downgrade time, 2 days in!

Tip for consumers:
Just don't bother.

Hello Tammy,

I apologize for the lack of responses you have been receiving from job postings. To help increase your chances of being hired, we encourage all care providers to pay close attention to the job application. By mentioning a few details from the job posting in your application and describing how you can fulfill those requirements, you will show a potential employer that you carefully read and understand their needs and that you have a strong interest in the position. Moreover, adding reviews, references, and a background check increase the strength of your profile and makes your profile stand out. I hope this helpful and good luck on the job search!

As a previous provider with Care.com when the company first started over a decade ago I can say that now as a parent the costs are outrageous. Add on costs for features that should be included are ridiculous. Childcare is slim enough without grasping for every penny parents have. The website itself is still easy to use and helpful, but the price gouging is another example of corporate greed running wild, especially on people who really need services for their children.

I've been using Care.com for years. They claim many available jobs in my area. I apply to almost all these jobs & I'm finding a pattern. A lot of the jobs look real but have no picture, say similar things, have similar pay, and they NEVER respond to me. They are 100% fake family profiles made by Care.com to look like they have more jobs to offer you. In reality there's only a handful. Very disappointed. I've had much better luck with Sittercity.com and had a $14/hr nanny job for over a year through them. Also have been receiving text messages from random out of state numbers looking for care... I have contacted Care.com about the issue weeks ago and have gotten no response. Not a reliable company looking out for its customers best interest.

I started an account recently, went through the process, got verified, applied for jobs, and then all of a sudden a get an email that my account was closed, with no reason given (just a list of possible reasons, none of which apply to me) and no recourse available. After researching on Consumerist.com, I found a lady who was kicked off while interviewing nannies. Apparently ANYONE can file a complaint and Care does not research, they just kick you off. I hadn't even had an interview yet! Really disgusted at this.

Be very careful on this site. They may advertise a one time fee, but they will continue to bill you $40 per month forever until you actually find their phone number (not on site - *******115), call them and cancel. It feels exceptionally dishonest

Hi Jodi,

We're sorry if you misunderstood our subscription service. All of our subscriptions are set to automatically renew until the member sets them to downgrade or cancel. This is an option you can manage on your own through your Account & Settings page, or by emailing or calling us.

We hope this helps clarify our billing policy, as well as the downgrading or cancelling process!

Complete waste of my time. Any function is ridiculous to attempt to use. Scam attempt this past week by a couple of women who offered nice job, very good pay but refused to tell me where the job was. Happily I didn't just hop out of the cabbage patch, got reverse numbers. The only place they could have connected me was care.com. Every time, it could not be more frustrating and time-wasting. Today was memorably ridiculous.

I have found your site well designed (obviously by a professional web designer). It is extremely easy to understand, use and seems to cover all areas I would expect to have need of, One, other thing, do you have someone who can help me do my home paperwork filing caught up until it's finished? Not overwhelming but extensive. Same person@ same price to me would be perfect if possible. Thank you.

I opened my account 24 hours ago with a 3 month termination. We were considering upgrading to the 12 month today but thankfully I didn't. I messaged them asking to extend me their 5 email day policy because we need to find someone within the next two weeks but I was booted. Like others, no explanation!

I'm reading all the reviews only to be amazed how many there are within the last 7 days.

The people that are responding to me are not reading my description and not available during my hours. Some are even rude.

One said if I needed a date night. My daughter is almost 16. I don't think so...

Any way to get to the list of favorites is hidden most of the time. It takes convoluted clicking around to even find it. You assume that the billing address zip is where someone needs service where many people don't live near their parents... just for a few things I notice right off. It would be helpful to allow a search for key words, too - either in description or otherwise, like a way to ask to only see people with CV-19 vax for example. Or how about allowing us to screen out people who are not currently available? Why make us click individually on those people to see their availability only to find it's nil?

To Care.com
You have terrible ratings. Everyone complains about the same things, auto renewals, not being able to get out of memberships, felons arriving to care for your family or caregivers not getting jobs.

You write back with these corporate apologies that you insist are good practices and that we all don't understand your fine print but you do not listen to your customers complaints as a outline to change these annoying practices,. People hate auto renewals.

You are defending a sinking ship. No one is at all pleased or understanding of your apologies. They are vacant of logic and show no interest in changing policies to make customers happy.

When Care. Com goes belly up soon, remember this at your next job.

Hi Marian,

We’re very sorry about your experience with us. Care.com is an automatically renewing subscription service, which is stated clearly on the Upgrade page as well as in our Terms of Use. This is a setting that you can manage on your own within your account, or you can call or e-mail us any time before the renewal date to make sure that the subscription is canceled. We would not want to interrupt the search process or communications between members. Additionally, many members find the auto renewing feature useful because it gives them constant access to a database of caregivers in their area.

We apologize for your experience, but do hope you were able to find the care that you family needs!

I purchased the premium membership and background check on 3/17/2023. My phone was stolen later that afternoon which has all of the information for this service. I checked my email on 3/19/2023 to request a refund and cancel the membership as there are no links to my subscription to access the account on the confirmation emails. There isn't a cancel subscription link on either of the emails as well. I sent them an email (3/19/2023) stating please refund me my money. They have charged me again (04/17//2023) for a recurring fee ($58.95) in which they refuse to refund me my money from the card. I am being charged for a service I never used and requested a cancellation by the best means I could. In doing this review they are asking for an order id; it is not in any email for the premium membership or background check..

I joined to be a pet sitter and even became a premium member. I sent out countless applications but no replies. What I really hate, is how they keep your CC on file! My account is set to delete the beginning of June and I better not see another charge! They also make you agree to things that you don't want to. You'd have better luck posting an AD in the newspaper than using this site!

Care.com lures people looking for tutors, babysitters, etc. into an expensive scam. Even if you don't choose to use them, you are on the hook for 3 "quarterly cycles" ie, 9 months -- they charge you once when you sign up, 3 months later, even if you have downgraded or deleted your account they charge again, and then again once your account is in dispute.

My credit card company worked with me to disconnect their charges from my account -- but not before I was out 180 dollars.

Stay away. Find a local sitter, tutor, etc. from your friends, family, etc.
